The nearest village, Maureilhan, is a quiet wine producing village, set in acres of vineyards, the nearest only 150 yards from the house. In the central square, you will find a very well stocked general store, a newsagent/tabac, butchers, post office and (essential part of French village life) hairdressers. On the main road, the bar/restaurant '112', has excellent set menu lunches for about 69F, including a carafe of local wine.

Maureilhan is 18kms from the nearest Mediterranean beaches, close to the Canal du Midi (now classed as a World Heritage site), 10 minutes by car from the centre of Beziers, 20 minutes from Narbonne with its ancient cathedral. An ideal centre for wine-tasting holidays The Mediterranean beaches are close by, ranging from a 7-mile long stretch of sand at Marseillan Plage to lively, cosmopolitan resorts like Cap d`Agde. The Herault River and thc Canal du Midi offer numerous opportunities for walking, swimming, fishing and boat trips. The magnificent Lac du Salagou 30 minutes away inland provides bathing, wind-surfing, fishing and excellent hilly walks.
